The JP162 single French horn is designed for children, featuring a ‘small wrap’ that is smaller than a full-size horn. This allows a child to place their right hand correctly in the bell while maintaining proper playing posture.

There is some debate among French horn teachers about which side to start new pupils on — the ‘Bb’ or the ‘F’ side. Both sides play the same notes, but the Bb side is generally easier to pitch, while the F side requires slightly different fingering.

The JP161 is the Bb side, and the JP162 is the F side. Both horns still read horn in F music and transpose a fifth, which can be confusing at first. As a horn player, you will eventually learn both sides, so it’s important to check with your teacher which single horn is recommended for you, as some teachers only teach Bb side and others only F side.
